Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy outside the womb.Usually such a pregnancy takes place in the tube, but it may also develop in the ovary or in the abdominal cavity.
It is caused by some obstruction in the tube preventing the impregnated egg-cell (ovum) from migrating down into the womb to continue its development there.
This obstruction may arise From inflammations, cysts or tumors, adhesions or pouches (diverticula) in the tube. There may have been space enough for slender spermatozoa to come through but not for the return of an impregnated ovum. The ovum is much larger anyway.
In case of ectopic pregnancy, the woman will start to bleed irregularly from the womb after being pregnant for a couple of weeks, and she will experience severe pains on the side of the pregnant tube. The pain is not just an ordinary cramp, but a severe, cutting pain making the patient go to bed feeling very ill.
If neglected, the attacks may inducce fainting spells, and if there is delay until the tube ruptures the patient may collapse from shock caused by internal hemorrhage.
A woman who experiences pain and bleeding during the first weeks of pregnancy should consult a doctor without delay, thereby preventing the emergency of a ruptured tube pregnancy.
An immediate operation and removal of the abnormal pregnancy is the only treatment.
