The pupil is the opening in the center of the eye, which admits light into the eye. It is surrounded by the iris which contracts and dilates the pupil by means of two muscles, a circular muscle (sphincter) which contracts the pupil and a radiating muscle which dilates the pupil.
The pupil is covered over by the cornea; right behind the opening of the pupil is the lens of the eye. Because the inside of the eye is in absolute darkness, the pupil seems to have nothing immediately back of it. The pupil contracts when exposed to light and when looking at a near object, and dilates in darkness and when looking at a distant object.
Normally both pupils are equals unless one is born with a defect.Otherwise , if the pupils are unequal or do not respond normally to distance and light it is a sign of disease.
